The South Side 'L', the inaugural branch of Chicago's elevated railroad system, opened in 1892 with a 3.6 mile track from Congress St (Now Ida B. Wells Dr) to 39th St (Now Pershing Rd).1 The trains that ran on the South Side 'L' were not the quiet electric-powered trains that have run on the 'L' for most of its history, rather, they were Baldwin steam locomotives. When Chicago was selected to hold the 1893 World's Fair, the South Side Elevated Railroad made plans to extend its tracks from 39th street to Jackson Park.
